Did’ya hear the about the 21 year old who sold her startup company for $100 million??? Did’ya? Did’ya? Did’ya??
A little backstory but not much. A girl moved and didn’t have many new friends. So she and her brothers decided to start a site to share their likes, etc. to find friends. The site became MyYearbook. She was 15. Now, she’s 21 and just sold the company for $100 million. Totally true story… here’s a link for the full thing: http://www.businessinsider.com/myyearbook-acquired-by-quepasa-for-100-million-2011-7
See, I’m not here to talk about the actual story. And yes, when you read the article your jaw will drop. $100 million… that’s a lot of cash. Sure, most is stock in the company that bought the company but those details are blah, blah to me.
The idea is that this girl found something and went for it. She had a dream and obtained it. She never gave up. Never quit. And look what happened…
I’m writing this to show you that there is still BIG THINGS out in this world waiting for all of us. We just have to find it. The news reports how bad the economy is. Yes, I know. The news reports how bad the markets are. Yes, I know. The news reports how the housing market isn’t recovering. Yes, I know. The news reports there’s no jobs. Yes, I… wait, there are jobs. I have a job… I’m a writer! I write books. Stories. Poetry. Blog posts. And sell all of it, except one.
People who succumb and just relax and let life take them for a ride are the ones who are always struggling, always unsure. My advice to you is to stand up and find that dream and go get it. What’s stopping you? Time? Money? Those are variables. Control them and move forward. It can be done as the article above shows. Seriously, who would take a 15 year old with a web site serious? Who would care? Who would sign up? Those are probably questions the girl and her brothers faced in their young lives, but they went on. They had a dream, a vision, and followed through.
And look where it ended up… $100 million offer.
So, if you’re on the sidelines worried, jump in the game here. Do you sit there at night, pecking at the keyboard? Do you follow other writing blogs, see the sales those authors are having and find you stomach turning with disbelief and touch of jealousy? Do you go on KindleBoards the beginning of each month to see who made the 1,000 books a month list and who sold 15,000 books? 20,000 books? 50,000 books?
If so, then why aren’t you publishing? Why aren’t you taking that step and getting out there and trying… Don’t sit any longer. Now’s the time. If you’re going on you own, get that book ready for KDP. If you’re going traditional, get your agent list ready and write the best damn query you can.
Get up an get out there! Don’t let the world drag you down… and don’t let the world drag you along. In the end, face it, we’re all going to end up dead… right? So, while you’re breathing, living, and here, take every second and chase that dream. No matter how big or how small, chase it.
